Hush Hour

White noise and sleep sounds

Fall asleep to the real world.

Rain on the roof, waves, a stream, the forest, crickets, a campfire. Real recordings and white, pink and brown noise, mixed your way over a living night scene that shows what you hear.

Ear candy

Seventeen sounds, from the real world

Every bed is a real field recording, picked by ear and by measure for an even, steady sound with no cars and no voices, then cut into a long loop that joins without a seam. Tap one to hear 20 seconds, as it plays in the app.

@TILES@

Also in the app: rain on a yard, rain on a tent, a mountain downpour, wind in the leaves, a fireplace, white noise and pink noise. Mix up to eight at once.

Made for the night

Everything a sound machine should do, and nothing in your way

A night that listens

Rain falls when you add rain. Fire lights the hills when you add a fire, fireflies come out over the crickets, the sea fills the valley, and far thunder lights the clouds. Turn on still scene if you like it calm.

Never the same twice

Every loop starts at a new point, each sound drifts a little in level, and rare moments (a far roll of thunder, an owl, a log popping) land at random with their own pitch. Your ear never learns the loop.

A timer that lets go

Pick 15 minutes to 2 hours or all night. Hush Hour fades out over 10 minutes so slowly you never hear it stop. Headphones out? It pauses rather than blast the room.

Easy on the battery

With the screen off nothing is drawn at all. The sound plays from the phone, with no internet and no sensors. Dim the screen at the bedside with one tap.

Your mixes

Start from nine ready made mixes like Rainy cabin or Storm at sea, set each sound's level, and save your own. A home screen widget plays and pauses with one tap.

For everyone

Big touch targets, TalkBack labels on every control, text that grows to twice its size, and colours that keep a 7 to 1 contrast. Two themes: midnight blue and true black for OLED.

What the science says

Built on the studies, honestly

Sound machines are not medicine, and we will not tell you they cure anything. But the research does say a few clear things, and Hush Hour is built around them.

38%

Faster to fall asleep

In a sleep lab, steady sound at a low level cut the median time to fall asleep by 38 percent. So Hush Hour starts quiet and plays wide stereo.

Messineo et al. 2017, Frontiers in Neurology

48 to 16

Wakings an hour

It is the jump from quiet to loud that wakes you, not the loudness. Steady sound shrinks the jumps. So every bed is chosen for an even sound, and rare moments stay soft and stop while the timer fades.

Stanchina et al. 2005, Sleep Medicine

19 min

Less dream sleep, all night

A 2026 lab study found pink noise left on all night cut REM sleep by about 19 minutes. So the timer is on by default and fades out once you are asleep. All night is there if you want it.

Basner et al. 2026, Sleep

Real

Nature, not synth

Natural sounds turned attention outward and raised the body's rest response in a brain imaging study. So every bed is a real recording of a real place.

Gould van Praag et al. 2017, Scientific Reports

Questions

Good to know

Does it work offline?

Yes, always. Every sound is in the app, and the app does not even ask for internet access.

Will it keep playing with the screen off?

Yes. It plays as a media service with a notification you can pause or stop from, also on the lock screen, until the timer ends or you stop it.

What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?

White noise has equal energy across all pitches and sounds bright, like a hiss. Pink noise softens the highs and sounds like steady rain. Brown noise is deeper still, like a far waterfall or a low rumble. Try each and keep the one you like.

Why does it fade out instead of playing all night?

The studies found steady sound helps most while you fall asleep, and one found noise left on all night took some dream sleep. So the timer is on by default and fades out slowly. If you want sound all night, pick All night.

Is it safe for a baby's room?

Keep the phone across the room, not by the cot, and the level low: soft enough that you could talk over it. Use the timer. Hush Hour starts quiet and has a soft ceiling on loudness for this reason.

Is it a medical app?

No. Hush Hour is for rest and relaxation. It does not diagnose or treat anything. If you sleep badly most nights, talk to a doctor.

Where do the recordings come from?

They are field recordings shared free of rights (CC0) on Freesound, chosen and cut for Hush Hour. The app lists them all.
